I had long been putting off reading this GEM of a book. So glad I waited because reading "My Way" while watching "Feud" was an absolutely delicious experience. I was transported back to girlhood when I lived and breathed Old Hollywood and Hollywood glamor. Joan Crawford was undeniably one of a kind in a realm of silver screen giants, even if the book definitely reveals her certain disinterest in raising children, fueling what we believe we know about her after the publication of "Mommie Dearest" — and sometimes she creepily ventures too far into the pleasing of one's man territory. But what the book also reveals is a woman who was tough and feminine, a woman who was open about her changes in fortune without an ounce of self-pity, and a woman who was able to improvise living large and well long past her Metro Goldwyn Mayer days, and a star who was aging with grace. (At least, on the page, she was.) The tone is friendly and authoritative. Her description of matching her shoes to her outfits by having shoes made with the same fabric as her dress and then covering them with plastic was a scream. Many delightful tips on taking care of clothing and cleaning. And Mamacita needs her own biography.Product details

My Way of Life (Audible Audio Edition) Joan Crawford Graymalkin Media LLC Books Reviews
I absolutely ADORE this book. So many pearls of wisdom mixed in with Hollywood glamour and a nice helping of common sense tips you can use every day.
Absolutely fascinating look into the "diva" machinations of one of Hollywood's most famous Golden Age stars. Throughout the entire read, Crawford reminds us that she is the thinnest, richest, most beautiful and famous woman in the world. And tells every woman out there how to not only copy her... but to solve the most important issue in their lives—getting their husband's approval. From selecting the best dress out of 300 to having your purse dyed to match your shoes, Crawford's tidbits of advice will keep you turning pages in fascination of a time long past. And with more recent biographies coming to light, being able to read between the lines is just as fascinating. No Mommie Dearest surprises here... her children are mentioned occasionally and with kindness, but knowing her financial situation and where she was in her career adds a definite camp value not to be missed.
This book was FAB! I learned how to organize a dinner party for 20, to NEVER let my husband know anything about childrearing or household cleaning routines, I needed to have a separate pair of shoes for each outfit {kept covered in plastic, of course,} How to properly hang clothes {forgive me if I DON"T do the wire hanger routine}, begin serious exercise to improve posture. And those exercises must have worked, I always thought she was a taller woman, maybe 5"8, but she was short like me at 5"4-- yet her presence was commanding. Natural beauty routines from the fridge and pantry are also recommended. Answer the phone in a pleasant and uplifting voice and NEVER let him see you looking anything but your best--he shouldn't know what a curler looks like...do people even use curlers anymore? His dressing room and your dressing room should be on opposite sides of your bedroom {outfitted with a small fridge for beverages}.
I tried to immerse myself in my "Treasure's" work day routine and was met with the stink eye and told not many husbands want their wives sitting in
on meetings.
I will try her exercise routines, her legs were gorgeous.
A fascinating look back at how a star lived back in the day!
While this book is really a hoot, there are some valuable tips someone can use today.
This is a fantastic look into Joan Crawford's "Way of life". A must have for any fan. So glad that it was re-released on kindle and audible.
If I'm ever asked to name the famous person, living or dead, I'd have dinner with, I'm saying Joan Crawford. No matter what else you read between the lines in this book, it's clear she was the ultimate hostess. I'm confident I could go to Joan's for dinner and the food would be delicious, appetizing, served at the exact moment she said it would, plus all my fellow-guests would be interesting and entertaining, and most important of all, not sodden with drink before dinner (Joan hates that). Best of all, my hostess, Joan herself, will be impeccably attired, and deeply interested in paying attention to me as her guest, and she will be so well organized that I won't even see the hard work and planning that went on behind the scenes as my dinner is served to me exactly on time.
Yes, some of her declarations are a little too good to be true - I feel bad for her 9 year old "babies" who were given a nap after school, then shuffled off to bed at 8pm so Joan could dedicate quality time to her husband. But I believe that more often than not, she was true to the philosophy she promotes in this book - be enthusiastic about everything, stay organized and energetic, and never miss an opportunity to better yourself. You don't go from being the fatherless daughter of a laundress to movie star and Pepsi executive without a strong work ethic and a steel determination to smile in the face of obstacles.
Keep in mind this was written by a woman from a different time. For a woman who was married four times, she seems to consider herself an expert on how to keep a man happy. If you're looking for a window into the outdated thinking of women, this is your book. How to wear your makeup (for your man), how to have a career (while keeping your man happy), how to decorate your home (to make it welcoming for your man)...you get the point. I'm gonna donate it to my local library.
