In Fenton's world, some kids are toons. Some think the change is biological. Others think the change is social. But some kids turn into toons, and Fenton's father just wants it to stop. He's even built a Realist movement to ban toons from the real world, hoping that it will keep his own children from following in their estranged mother's cartoon footsteps.
Tensions rise as the Realists lobby to get their ban set into law, and toons fight for their right to be themselves. Fenton's father knows he can count on his two boys to stand behind him and his dream of building a safe, a toon-free reality. It's just too bad that Fenton's becoming a toon....

This was a hard read, mostly because I went in expecting a story about Transformation and instead got a story that is about racism/sexism. Its not a bad story overall, but it drags on at points far longer then it should, and the main character has such a flip flop personality that it is a pain. It has little heart compared to how grim and depressing it gets, and the ending just happens, there is a massive build then nothing that breaks the mold in a way that would make this a memorable experience. This has the pieces to be a great story, but it is too long or too short depending on how you look at it, for the amount of exposition not enough is explained. Its a interesting idea, but It feels too cookie cutter when it could have I dare say ground breaking. Still it is worth a read for the shear interesting world it creates.Product details

Bait and Switch edition by Austen Crowder Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I just finished reading this and it was an incredible experience. I enjoy stories that want to do more than just entertain me. I want to be engaged. I want to be challenged. This book made me feel deeply and think hard. I couldn't help but imagine myself in the protagonist's place, thinking of what I'd do in the same situation. This book avoids easy solutions to its characters' problems. No one is a perfect hero or villain. It feels real. I felt genuine anger, heartbreak and wonder while reading this.
If you're in any kind of a closet, this book will speak to you. I'm still struggling to define my own identity, and this story made me want to accept my true self wholly, whatever it ends up being.
There are wonderful ideas here, characters that are simultaneously archetypal and realistic, plus a brilliantly painted world you'll wish you could visit. It's a little rougher than most professionally published novels (I caught a few typos), but I literally couldn't care less. This is someone writing from their HEART, and it's powerful, important stuff. This is the kind of experience I hope for whenever I sit down to read a story.
First let me say that Austen is a fantastic writer. She's a contributor over at the Bilerico Report and is the author of one of my favorite short stories on gender, which can be found here[...]
Austen brings the same attention to detail and love of the craft to Bait and Switch. All of the characters were believable and with diverse motivations that made each of them interesting to follow. Austen doesn't let the story get bogged down with a lot of side characters and doesn't fall into the traps of making some characters more sympathetic than others, even if the story is from Fenton's point of view.
The work is a little hard to follow in places, but I attribute that to the difficult task of rendering cartoon characters and their actions in prose form. For the most part it was an easy read with wonderful visuals. If you've seen Who Framed Roger Robert then you have a pretty good idea of what the world of Quota would look like and Bait and Switch is just as creative with the world's cartoon elements.
The extended metaphor of turning toon to gender identity disorder is brilliantly handled. As a trans woman, there were many places I found myself pointing at the page and going, "I did that!" which made me feel so much closer to Fenton and his struggle.
But what sold Bait and Switch for me was Fenton's conflict with his father, Daniel Cobbler. Most works about gender focus on the character undergoing the change to the exclusion of their parents. Daniel is a Realist, an activist against toons and their way of life. Because of this, Daniel is the closest thing Fenton has to a true antagonist but like any other character, Daniel has his reasons for acting the way he does. Fenton uses every trick in the book to keep his father from learning the truth about him and how Austen resolves this conflict had me in tears.
Bait and Switch was everything I hoped it would be. A book that takes anthropomorphic characters and makes it really matter and effect the story. Bait and Switch is set in a world similar to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", where toons and humans exist in the same world. The difference in Bait and Switch is that humans can become toons. The story is told from a young man named Fenton who is starting to change into a toon and doesn't know how to handle it. Especially since the world at large doesn't like the "toon" lifestyle and is working to make toons "get real". And Fenton's father is the head figure for the Realist political movement looking to pass laws against toons.
Bait and Switch is a metaphor for gender identity and gay rights, and it's a wonderful and beautifully imaginative way to get the point across and it helps to express the struggles of a young person learning to accept themselves when the outside world doesn't. The book can be a bit hard to follow from time to time, given the complexity of trying to mix the toon world and the real world. It also doesn't steer away from adult ideas like sex, relationships, and abandonment and how it relates to the toon world. It can be hit or miss depending on personal taste (grenades, bombs, and anvil gags are the toon equivalent of sex much like patty cake was implied toon sex in Who Framed Roger Rabbit), but I applaud the author for taking such risks, and in my opinion, succeeding.
Another thing I loved about Bait and Switch was the fact that it was a short novel. So many authors feel the need to cram unnecessary subplots and information into a story, but Miss Crowder didn't do that. She kept the story focused and it truly makes for a great read, one that keeps you emotionally invested and continually turning the page.
And other than some minor spelling errors and an ending that left me feeling a bit unsatisfied, this was a wonderful book. A beautifully written story that doesn't get over-indulgent and takes risks. Something that everyone should definitely read.
